Prescott Circus Highlighted in SF Chronicle feature on Oakland Budget Cuts

Prescott Circus Theatre was highlighted in the SF Chronicle’s January 25 article, “Oakland budget cuts leave nonprofits reeling: We need more culture, not less” by Enterprise reporter, Conner Letourneau, with photographs by Yolanda M. James.

Prescott Circus, alongside our sister organizations, are feeling the strain of the current economy and the December decision by Oakland City Council to eliminate this year’s Cultural Funding Grants. These are emotional and challenging times. But this does not deter our commitment to our children, families, schools, and community to ensure Oakland doesn’t lose what makes Oakland so great. The article is a call to action.

Please join us in this commitment: buy tickets to shows, donate to your local programs, reach out and ask them how you can support them. ♥️💛💚Talk to your people about why the arts are important to you and are essential to our lives.

Excerpts from the article:
“Our creativity and culture are really the backbone of our economy, and the backbone of the city’s vibrant identity,” said Ashleigh Kanat, Oakland’s director of economic and workforce development. “It’s why people, businesses and educational institutions want to be here.”

“Why pull funding from the one thing the city really has going for itself?” Bedoya said of the city’s recent decision to crater the grant program for the arts. “It makes no sense. We need more culture, not less of it.”
