Prescott Circus Theatre – About 2023

2/26/2023

Prescott Circus Theatre, now in our 38th year, empowers and engages Oakland youth through circus and theater education while contributing to the cultural fabric of the entire Bay Area. We provide safe environments for youth to develop the confidence and skills to thrive on stage, in school, and in life. This is accomplished through no-cost, in-depth, year round school and community based programs in partnership with professional artists, public schools, and other local organizations. Programs primarily take place twice weekly for one-to-two semesters. Participants learn traditional circus activities such as juggling, acrobatics, acting, and unicycling while actively engaging in the process of creating, producing, and performing a theatrical circus show. PCT strengthens its program with the inclusion of other areas of cultural arts including African stilt dancing, hambone body percussion, and hip hop dance.

We work exclusively with schools where 60% or more of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Approximated student demographics have remained consistent over the years with the consistency of our school 6 – 8 annual public school partner: 80% African American, 12% Latino, 2% Asian/Pacific Islander, 2% Multiracial, 2% Additional backgrounds, 2% Caucasian. 58%  girls and 42% boys.

Each year, we produce free spring and summer productions that attract over 1,500 attendees. Our Youth Performing Company, composed of advanced students, performs for numerous community events. Our programs this year have been engaging 280 students in grades TK – 8, with the majority of programs serving elementary school students in fourth and fifth grades.
