In Memory of Sylvia Unikel

20131014-222937.jpgFrom 1978-2004, Sylvia Unikel was a generous volunteer with 2nd–6th graders at Prescott Elementary School in West Oakland where her daughter Belle was a teacher. As a result, hundreds of Oakland children learned their math facts and got help with their homework while experiencing Sylvia’s patience and kindness,

During these years, Sylvia also became a fan of the Prescott Circus Theatre program, an after-school youth development program that allows Prescott children to shine through performing arts. The Prescott Circus youth performers can be seen at community events throughout the year, providing stilt walkers, jugglers, clowns, and general merriment and mayhem throughout the Bay Area and beyond.

When Belle retired from Prescott, Sylvia continued to be a loyal fan of the Prescott Circus. Her daughter Belle continues to work with the circus as a tutor and summer teacher. This photo was taken at Sylvia’s last visit to see Oakland’s stars in action – and the stars in her eyes give you an inkling of her joy and supportive love for these children.
