Umbrella People was conceived by Oakland Spirit Orchestra Directors and OUSD teachers, Alison Balano and Tarika Lewis, as a reflection on the people in our world who shelter others, provide safety, and create spaces where others can thrive. The project aims to engage audiences and young artists in song, music, and circus to explore ways in which we care for, and receive care from one another.
Oakland Spirit Orchestra is a youth orchestra composed of elementary, middle, and high school students from over 5 West Oakland public schools. The kids construct their own arrangements, write their own music, and improvise. The Orchestra is directed by Oakland Unified School District teacher, Alison Balano, Tarika Lewis, and Baba Wainwright.
Oakland Unified School District’s Young Adult Program supports young adult learners (18-22 years old) with moderate to severe disabilities as they become responsibly independent adults that have meaningful connections, routines, and participation in their community. The YAP choir is led by Michelle Jordan.
